If you are interested in the President's Opportunity Training Initiative, this checklist can help you understand the process for using the program.

- Visit the Maine CareerCenter's website on the President's Opportunity Training Initiative to find out more information.
- Visit or call your local CareerCenter, www.mainecareercenter.com provides a list of all the CareerCenters as well as all of the necessary contact information; you may also call 1-888-457-8883, M-F, 8AM-5PM, to find the nearest CareerCenter.
- Decide which college, university, community college, or trade and technical school you are interested in attending to take courses for the approved training program. Go to the Maine CareerCenter's web page on the President's Opportunity Training Initiative or www.maine.gov/education/highered/index.htm
- Apply for financial aid; you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov to be eligible for the Pell Grant.
- Go to the financial aid office of the school you have chosen to apply to and bring evidence that you are currently receiving unemployment benefits. The attached letter serves as proof for up to 90 days. After 90 days, or if you lose this letter, provide other evidence that you are currently receiving unemployment insurance, such as your Maine UI benefit history transcript at https://portalxw.bisoex.state.me.us/webinq/
- Make sure the program that you are interested in is approved training. Visit the Maine CareerCenter Consumer Reports System to find a list of approved training programs. Some programs will not allow you to continue receiving your UI benefits while you pursue your education.
