Does it cost anything to use Maine's Job Bank?

No, this site is a part of the public workforce system and funded with federal dollars.

Can I file for Unemployment Insurance through Maine's Job Bank?

No, Maine's Job Bank is a separate system. The best way to file for benefits or to check the status of your claim is to use the Unemployment Insurance Commission's online services. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How do I get started?

Visit the Maine CareerCenter homepage and click on the Job Seeker link below the Maine's Job Bank logo.

Registration

Why do I need to register?

You will have access to services that let our staff match you with your ideal job, advanced job notification for Veterans, and additional resources including skills certification and training programs.

How do I register?

After you create an account use your personal username and password to complete the Maine's Job Bank registration process.

Why do I have to enter my social security number?

In order to receive federal dollars and keep this service free, we are required to ask for your social security number. It is not made available to employers or the public. To avoid identity theft, state-of-the-art software has been installed to protect your privacy.

Why do I have to answer so many questions when I register?

We need to collect this information to match jobs and available programs best suited to your current situation.

Why do I need to be registered before I can apply with employers?

Some employers utilize specific processes through the local CareerCenters which require staff assistance. Other employers do not wish to have their information posted and will only accept applications or résumés through the CareerCenters or Maine's Job Bank.

Is there a username and password retrieval process?

Yes, from the Job Seeker Login page, click on "I forgot my username" or "I forgot my password." You will then complete a method to retrieve your username and/or password. It will be sent to the email address associated with your account.

Do I need an email address to create an account?

Yes, you need to have an email address. The system will send you match notifications (if you turn that on in your profile) and username/password resets to that account.

What if I don't have an email address?

You can create a free e-mail account with may providers such as: www.hotmail.com, www.yahoo.com or www.google.com. There is a link to these sites in the account creation process.

How do I change my email address in my account?

To change your email address, you must log in to Maine’s Job Bank and edit your account. This will assure that you will continue to receive notices about job opportunities.

If I don’t log in for a while, will my account stay in the system?

Your account will remain in the system even if you don’t log in. However, if you do not log in within 90 days, your account will become inactive. To reactivate your account, simply log in. If you forgot your password, you can reset it by clicking on "I forgot my password" in the login window.

Résumés

How do I create a résumé?

If you need résumé assistance, you can use the résumé tips found on our website or visit your local CareerCenter for help to create a résumé. The CareerCenter offers workshops on résumé writing, and you may use a CareerCenter computer to create one.

Can I upload my résumé?

Yes, after you've created an account you will be able to upload your personal résumé and store it in Maine's Job Bank. Your résumé and your profile information will be made available to the employer when you submit a referral for an open position. You may upload your résumé for storage in .rtf, .doc, .txt, .odt, and .pdf formats.

Will employers see my résumé?

Employers will only see your résumé if you allow them access.

How do I send a résumé to an employer?

You will need to follow the directions in the individual job posting. Some employers will accept résumés by email or from their website.

Do employers search résumés on your system?

Not at this time. We are working on enhancements to Maine's Job Bank that will enable employers to search criteria based on keyword, skills, experience, and education.

How do I know my résumé is active to match with employer’s jobs?

You can control the active status of your résumé from your Job Match Profile and can choose to transmit your résumé at the time you accept the referral from an employer that requests to receive résumés in this manner.

Job Matching & Searching

How do I search for job listings in Maine's Job Bank?

There are two ways to search the job listings in Maine's Job Bank: browse through all of the listings in a designated area or match the listings to your profile.

To browse:

You may browse without being logged in by filling in the "Browse All Jobs" box at the bottom of the login page, and clicking on the "Go" button. NOTE: If you are receiving Unemployment Benefits searching for jobs in this manner does not count towards the requirement to use the Maine Job Bank to search for employment.

Once you have logged into your account you may log in to your account and fill in the "Browse All Jobs" fields on the right side of the screen, then click on the "Go" button. Note: To see all of the jobs in your area only fill in your zip code and a desired mileage range.

To match:

Log in to your account. Click on the "Go" button next to "Search my profile now." With this method, you can choose to be notified by email when a new listing that matches your profile gets posted.

How do I get the best results from my job match profile?

Follow these tips to receive the highest number of job matches from your Maine Job Bank registration. Please note that after logging in, the Maine Job Bank was designed for people to search for jobs using both their job match profile and the browse tool. The profile match is designed to be a very narrow and focused job search only returning jobs that fall into the occupational categories listed on your profile. The browse tool was designed to allow job seekers to broaden their work search both in occupation and/or by area. Items listed below in bold are the most common mistakes made by job seekers that limit job matches.

In the "Edit My Account" Section:
Be sure to have your current e-mail address correctly listed in the “account” section and turn on e-mail notifications. (The e-mail notification on/off switch is found on the landing page when you log in).
Under the Job Match Profile Section:
Under “qualifications”, make sure you have properly recorded your educational level and driver’s license information.
  • In "preferences", use the largest search radius in miles possible. (You may wish to travel a little bit longer if the job is particularly attractive!)
  • Also in “preferences” avoid using “1’s” in the preference scale for shifts, full/part time, temporary and travel as in doing so jobs will not be displayed for your review. (Our system considers any job; 39 hours or less part time, a duration of less than 6 months temporary and working only one evening a month second shift) If you use “2’s” for preferences that are less desirable to you, the job will still be displayed for your consideration and possible selection.
  • Under “jobs” you are able to add up to six job categories to your profile which will matched against our open job orders every time you log in or a job is posted by an employer (provided you have e-mail notifications turned on). You should list as many job categories as you can in areas that you have actual job experience in. Be sure to add the proper months of experience after you add the job category to your profile. (You may have to scroll your screen down to see the box to add your experience). Multiple job categories and properly added months of experience is critical to your job match results as many employers use these occupational codes and experience as screening tools on their job listings.
Using the Browse Tool:
After logging into your account and starting on the landing page the browse tool can be found on the right hand side of the page. We suggest searching using your profile first and then use the browse tool to expand your job search.
  • Start your search by selecting the lowest number (10 miles) from your zip code and hit the “go” button. If this does not return a reasonable number of jobs to look through then increase the mileage selection until it does.
  • You can add a “keyword” to your search if you are searching for a particular type of job but this is extremely restrictive and will not return a large number of jobs for you to review.
  • As you are not searching with your profile, many of the jobs returned may have qualifications (job categories with experience, education, licensure etc.) that are not listed as part of your profile and thus you may not be able to refer yourself to these jobs. This will be denoted by the lack of the employer name under the job title (only the town or area) at the top left of the screen, or the two choice buttons (“I’m not interested/take be back to my search results” and “I’m interested, tell me how to apply) displayed above the job summary. In general, you will be able to refer yourself to many jobs when the employer does not list experience as a requirement.
General Job Search Tips:
  • Log in to your account and conduct a job search (by both profile and browse) at least several times a week.
  • If you have a job ID number (from a job notice e-mail or other) you can search the job quickly by typing in the ID number in the “Find posting by job ID” section found at the bottom right hand corner of the landing page (after you log in to your account).
  • If you experience any issues with the productivity of your Maine Job Bank account, call or drop by your local CareerCenter for assistance
While browsing jobs, I found a job that I am qualified for but it is not matching my profile.

If you find a job that you know you are qualified for but you are not able to apply for the job because is not matching your profile, try refining your profile. If that does not result in a match, Contact Us and someone will help you.

Are all jobs available in my city on your system?

No, not all employers use our system. However, we have employers that post positions throughout the entire state of Maine.

Who is allowed to post jobs on Maine's Job Bank?

Approved employers and Job Bank Central staff can post jobs on Maine's Job Bank. Employers are carefully screened through the New Employer Registration process, and when approved may post jobs online. All jobs listed in Maine's Job Bank must adhere to the Job Posting Guidelines. Employers who wish to remain completely anonymous can request that Job Bank Central staff post and screen jobs listings for them. These services are funded through the State of Maine at no charge.

I found a listing that does not appear to be a "real" job. Should I report it?

Yes, if you find a job listing that you think may not be a real job, a duplicate job listing or a job listing that is listed even though it has been closed, please report your findings by using the Contact Us link found at the bottom of any Maine's Job Bank screen. All job listings must adhere to the Job Posting Guidelines.

Does your system have information on home-based business opportunities?

We do not accept postings for Work-At-Home pay positions unless these job postings meet the requirements set forth in the Fair Labor Standards Act and Maine laws and regulations related to employment.

Why isn't the employer name listed on every job posting? Why can't I apply directly to the employer?

Each employer determines the application process that best suits their needs; some employers design their recruitment method to discourage individual contact by applicants other than their chosen referral method. The system attempts to provide a way for job seekers to apply in the method preferred by the employer.

Job Notifications

Will I be notified of job matches?

You will receive email notifications of matches to your profile if you turn the email notification on. You can do this on the "My Home" screen when you are logged in to your account.

Do I have to act on a job notification e-mail?

Yes, you are being provided the notification based on the information you provided in your work registration.  As such you should log into your account and view the job description along with the stated job qualifications. If you are not qualified or feel that the job is not suitable, select the “back to search results” button in the “I’m not interested box” at the top of the job description.

How do I stop job notification emails?

To stop receiving emails, log on to your account and click on the "Turn OFF" for email notification.

Why am I receiving job notices for jobs that I know I am not qualified for?

Please be aware that we have increased the number of job notices sent to job seekers by going to broader occupational categories, which is matched to the categories that you selected in your profile. This allows the job seekers to view a greater number of employment opportunities and make his or her own decision about which jobs to apply for.

Why do I get job notices from areas I didn't request?

You may need to refine your search or profile to include a specified radius that you are willing to travel to work.

The link to the job notice that I received in my email does not work. How can I get to that the job listing?

You can copy and paste the link from the job notification email into your browser. This will bring you to the user login screen. If the above does not work, you can also view the job by going to the CareerCenter website clicking on the Job Seeker login link, and logging into your Maine Job Bank account. On your "My Home" page, click on the "Go" button that is next to "Search on my profile now." This will show you all of the jobs that match your profile.

Job Notices have been sent to me with numbers that are invalid, what does that mean?

Positions have closed after you received the email.

Referrals

Will I be notified of job matches?

You will receive email notifications of matches to your profile (also known as referrals) if you turn the email notification on. You can do this on the "My Home" screen when you are logged in to your account.

How do I stop referral emails?

To stop receiving emails, log on to your account and click on the "Turn OFF" for email notification.

What does it mean to accept a job referral?

Accepting a referral means that you are interested in the job and agree to contact the employer to apply for the job. Once you accept a referral you will be given the information that you need to apply for the job. We do this so employers have an idea as to who and how many will be applying for any given Job.

Why am I receiving referrals for jobs that I know I am not qualified for?

Please be aware that we have increased the number of job notices sent to job seekers by going to broader occupational categories, which is matched to the categories that you selected in your profile. This allows the job seekers to view a greater number of employment opportunities and make his or her own decision about which jobs to apply for. If you are not qualified for a job that you received as a referral, you can ignore that referral.

Do I have to follow through on job referrals?

Depending on your situation, it may affect your unemployment benefit claim if you do not follow through on referrals for jobs that meet your qualifications. Once you have accepted a referral form the Maine Job Bank you are obligated to apply to the employer.

Why do I get job referrals from cities I didn't request?

You may need to refine your search or profile to include a specified radius that you are willing to travel to work.

The link to the job referral that I received in my email does not work. How can I get to that referral?

You can copy and paste the link from the job posting email into your browser. This will bring you to the user login screen. If the above does not work, you can also view your referral by going to the CareerCenter website clicking on the Job Seeker login link, and logging into your Maine Job Bank account. On your "My Home" page, click on the "Go" button that is next to "Search on my profile now." This will show you all of the the jobs that match your profile.

Referrals sent to me with these job numbers are invalid, what does that mean?

Positions have closed after you received the email.

How do I delete jobs that are on my referrals list that are now closed?

Maine's Job Bank was designed to “store” all the referrals that are accepted and record them within your Job Match Profile. The referral record enables job seekers to easily access information about their job search process. Please note that only the last 5 referrals accepted will appear on your personal “home page” when you log in to your account. Past referrals are available for review by clicking on the link “view all referrals”. The list of referrals accepted is accessible from you account for a period of 90 days while you are actively searching for employment through the Maine Job Bank. After 90 days of inactivity the referral information will be archived.
